Change the Dream (May the 4th be with you!)

Last year, Sanctus1 hosted one of these days - there's another happening soon at the Monastery in Gorton. Book! It's an eye-opener.

Weather with you...

I hate the Manchester Hilton building.

IMHO, it's a clunky slab of uninspiring glass that dominates the south end of Deansgate. I have to walk past it several times a day to and from home, work, the pub... I particularly hate the step half way up the back that increases the floor area of the flats above and gives the bar a creepy see-through floor section.

But some days its ugliness catches my eye as the weather transforms it. And sometimes it even reflects my mood back at me. The other day (above) its steely flint-grey appearance reflected my own gritted-teeth-head-down week...

And occassionally it has its head in the clouds (literally).

Loading Bay

The flyer says it all really - a new cafe round the corner from work (near the unis/ by Sugden Sport Centre, in the same building as SandBar). And yes the latte was good...

In the pouring rain of another Thursday morning...

"You’ll never see the hacienda. It doesn’t exist. The hacienda must be built."

I suspect Tony Wilson's funeral notice should have read: "Flowers, or donations to Christies. But please, no tribute gigs..."

Good on you Gordon.

I, for one, am pleased that there is to be a review of the super casino plans for East Manchester, and that the talk is that the proposal is 'dead in the water'. The BBC reports that Manchester MP's and the city council are not that pleased. East Manchester MP Graham Stringer said that the people of Manchester would not be happy; this person from Manchester is happy!

I saw Manchester, the holy city...

We're in the middle of a series on "Cities and Gardens" at the moment and last night was about Jerusalem. There was space to reflect on the history of the city, the Holy of Holies (and thin places), the lament for place and values, and about our hopes for the future. Ben finished the evening with a meditation and prayer - which I've adapted slightly to reproduce here:

I was standing on Victoria Bridge
Looking back over the city
And the cold
Blue autumn sky broke open over my head
And the Sprit of God breathed on my eyes
And my eyes were opened:

I saw Manchester, the holy city,
Coming down out of heaven
Shining like a rare jewel
Sparkling like clear water in the eye of the sun
And all the sickness was gone from the city
And there were no more suburbs and apartment blocks
No difference between Beswick and Didsbury.

I saw the Irwell running with the water of life
As bright as crystal
As clear as glass
The children of Manchester swimming in it

And the Spirit showed me the tree of life
Growing in Piccadilly Gardens.

I looked out and there were no more homeless people
There were no women working the streets
There were no more junkies up the allies
HIV and AIDS were a thing of the past
There were no more racist attacks
No more attacks on gay people
No more rapists
No more football riots
Because there was no more hate
And I saw women walking safe at nights
And the men were full of passion and gentleness
And none of the children were ever abused
Because the people’s sex was full of justice and joy.

I saw an old woman throw back her head
And laugh like a young girl
And when the sky closed back her laughter
Rang in my head
For days and days
And would not go away.

This is what I saw, looking back over the city,
And I knew then that there would be a day of resurrection
And I believe that there will be a day of resurrection.

(With due respect and a reverent hat tip to Doug Gay)

Catholic Ecclessiology and Contemporary Mission

Fresh expressions are running a series of day conferences called 'Hard Questions'. There is one in Manchester Cathedral on 3rd May with John Drane and Angela Tilby, from Westcott House. You can book tickets here. I think that it'll be a really thought provoking day.

Super, casino

Well, no-one saw that coming!...

Super, we get a new massive casino in a part of town where the main recreational opportunities already involve spending money that many don't have - Gala and Mecca hang your heads.

A further headache for GA? A disatrous planning decision? A money-making, soul-sucking enterprise? An employment opportunity? A regeneration trigger?

Tellingly, the Casino Advisory Panel said that "the city [Manchester] has the greatest need in terms of multiple deprivation of all the proposals that were before us." And this was a *good* reason to award it?...
